Mar 26 - Jun 29    Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest Exhibition
Join the museum March 26-June 29, for "Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest" explores the collaborative artistic practice of Ed and his wife, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, during the decades they spent living and working in the small northern Panhandle town of Hope, Idaho. Renowned for their politically confrontational and socially engaged artwork, the Kienholzes’ presence in the Inland Northwest showcases how radical and boundary-pushing artists are not exclusively confined to coastal urban centers, and that regions often regarded as peripheral and conservative have in fact offered fertile ground for artistic experimentation, risk, and critique. Beyond Hope contributes to revised understandings of American art history by examining how two internationally recognized artists embedded their work in local and regional culture, environment, and history. While the Kienholzes’ impact on art and culture of the inland Northwest was widely acknowledged during Ed’s lifetime, it has since faded from public memory, and exists more as personal reminiscence than art history. The Kienholzes’ hybrid life-work practice in Hope points to the capacity for experimental and category-defying histories of American art to remain hidden in plain sight. In keeping with these artists’ investigations of the profound contradictions and often brutal realities of the human condition, Beyond Hope hopes to locate, literally and figuratively, the universal through the particular by embedding art in everyday experience.

Mar 26 - Jun 29    Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition
Join us for the “Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition” from 3/26-6/29, the culmination of three or more years of dedication, creativity, and exploration as the MFA students unveil their thought-provoking works. This year’s MFA candidates are Mozi Jones and Reika Okuhara. For families visiting during WSU Family Weekend, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into contemporary art alongside loved ones, and to create memories together as you explore the diverse range of artworks crafted by these talented students. With years of intensive study and creative exploration, these students have honed their craft, challenged conventions, and delved deep into their artistic practice to bring forth works that resonate on a profound level. From visual narratives to thought-provoking conceptual pieces, this exhibition showcases works that are always fresh, relevant, and pushing the boundaries of artistic discourse. Whether you're a seasoned art enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of contemporary art, this exhibition promises an enriching and inspiring experience for all who visit.

Mar 26 - Jun 29    Subversive Intent: Selections from the Collection Exhibition
On display from 3/26 through 6/29, "Subversive Intent: Selections from the Collection" brings together seldom-exhibited works from the museum’s permanent collection including graphic masterpieces by William Hogarth, Francisco Goya, and Honoré Daumier, as well as contemporary works by artists Jenny Holzer, Roger Shimomura, Juventino Aranda, and many others. This exhibition aims to create a dialogue with the politically and socially engaged work of Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, as seen in our concurrent exhibition, Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest. While the Kienholzes were known as art world provocateurs, both exhibitions move beyond the purely bombastic and confrontational to show another side of subversion, one that is introspective and irreverent as well as surprising. Throughout history, artists have used humor and critique in their works to draw attention to social issues or simply to entertain. Recognizing their role in reflecting the historical moment, artists often identify, manipulate, or comment upon a period’s wounds, wars, hypocrisies, or other human follies and frailties. At times, their critical eye provides us with the ability to laugh at that which we fear, while elsewhere they help us better see and understand humankind’s shortcomings, raising our awareness in the process. As chroniclers of our times, these expressions of personal temperament or point of view may become asides to an artist’s primary practice while for others it is their life’s work; nevertheless, they are delivered with astute reflection and wry accounting. Our exhibition also makes room for works of a less overt nature, showing the artist as a helpful agitator transforming everyday banalities into unexpected mysteries, subverting expectations of art, artists, and the world we wish to know.

May 9 - May 11    Pullman High School Drama Club Presents "Play On"
Pullman High School Drama Club presents "Play On" by Rick Abbot. One plucky community theatre is about to produce a show called Murder Most Foul, a new “murder mystery play” with the same title as an Agatha Christie novel but with no relation whatsoever. The director/theatre manager, Gerry, thought producing the play was a good idea since the inexperienced playwright has agreed to let the company perform the show for no charge. Gerry, however, had no idea what disasters awaited: the show is hilariously amateur, the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder, and to top it off the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! It doesn’t help that the cast is disgruntled, and the playwright accidentally deletes the entire sound effect board. All of the disasters come to fruition in Act III when the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps at every turn. Fun and laughter for the whole family! Performances are May 9, 10, 11 at 7:00 PM in the Pullman High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults. Doors open at 6:30 PM.

May 23    Exclusive Tour at the Art Museum with Walla Walla Foundry President
On Thursday, May 23rd from 3:00-4:00 p.m., Jonathan Follett, President of the Walla Walla Foundry, will share fascinating details concerning the fabrication of some of the world’s most ambitious artworks. Beginning with Mine Camp (1991), a seminal sculpture created by artists Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, Follett will also highlight additional projects his organization has produced in the subsequent decades as the Walla Walla Foundry has become one of the largest contemporary art fabricators in the world. Bronze fragments and an immersive reproduction of Mine Camp are included in the museum’s current exhibition, Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest, which will be on view through June 29, 2024. Originally founded in 1980 as a bronze casting foundry, the Walla Walla Foundry now employs over 100 people and produces work in a range of materials and through multiple processes. The foundry casts in various alloys, including bronze, copper, brass, stainless steel, silver and zinc. It also produces work in wood, resin, glass, and wax. It houses an advanced technological infrastructure encompassing a digital design and modeling department, high resolution CNC machines, 3D scanning, and high precision water jet cutting services.

May 23    At the Depot | Palouse People talk Remembering Fallen Cougars
We are very much looking forward to WSU History Department graduate students, Jordan Bergstrom, Kyley Canion-Brewer, and Cassie Crisman giving another Fallen Cougars presentation. Under the direction of Dr. Ray Sun, the ongoing Fallen Cougars project assembles information and photos as a way of honoring the war dead of Washington State College (now University). Each year, students choose a specific Cougar veteran whose story has touched them, and they share their journey of discovery with us. The mission of the Fallen Cougars project is to digitize information and photos honoring the war dead of Washington State College, beginning with those who fought in World War II. The project aims to restore to public memory the identities of approximately 250 WSC students and faculty, transforming them from names on a plaque to young men that contemporary WSU students and the public can relate to. The project’s goal is to serve as a scholarly resource, as well as "a means to advance public understanding and appreciation for the service and legacy of these former Cougars in this defining moment of American and world history.

May 23 - May 25    Pullman High School Drama Club Presents "Radium Girls"
Pullman High School Drama Club presents "Radium Girls" by D.W. Gregory. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Based on the true stories of the women who stood up for justice. Written with warmth and humor and called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science. Performances are May 23, 24, 25 at 7:00 PM in the Pullman High School Auditorium.
