Mar 26 - Jun 29    Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest Exhibition
Join the museum March 26-June 29, for "Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest" explores the collaborative artistic practice of Ed and his wife, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, during the decades they spent living and working in the small northern Panhandle town of Hope, Idaho. Renowned for their politically confrontational and socially engaged artwork, the Kienholzes’ presence in the Inland Northwest showcases how radical and boundary-pushing artists are not exclusively confined to coastal urban centers, and that regions often regarded as peripheral and conservative have in fact offered fertile ground for artistic experimentation, risk, and critique. Beyond Hope contributes to revised understandings of American art history by examining how two internationally recognized artists embedded their work in local and regional culture, environment, and history. While the Kienholzes’ impact on art and culture of the inland Northwest was widely acknowledged during Ed’s lifetime, it has since faded from public memory, and exists more as personal reminiscence than art history. The Kienholzes’ hybrid life-work practice in Hope points to the capacity for experimental and category-defying histories of American art to remain hidden in plain sight. In keeping with these artists’ investigations of the profound contradictions and often brutal realities of the human condition, Beyond Hope hopes to locate, literally and figuratively, the universal through the particular by embedding art in everyday experience.

Mar 26 - Jun 29    Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition
Join us for the “Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition” from 3/26-6/29, the culmination of three or more years of dedication, creativity, and exploration as the MFA students unveil their thought-provoking works. This year’s MFA candidates are Mozi Jones and Reika Okuhara. For families visiting during WSU Family Weekend, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into contemporary art alongside loved ones, and to create memories together as you explore the diverse range of artworks crafted by these talented students. With years of intensive study and creative exploration, these students have honed their craft, challenged conventions, and delved deep into their artistic practice to bring forth works that resonate on a profound level. From visual narratives to thought-provoking conceptual pieces, this exhibition showcases works that are always fresh, relevant, and pushing the boundaries of artistic discourse. Whether you're a seasoned art enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of contemporary art, this exhibition promises an enriching and inspiring experience for all who visit.

Mar 26 - Jun 29    Subversive Intent: Selections from the Collection Exhibition
On display from 3/26 through 6/29, "Subversive Intent: Selections from the Collection" brings together seldom-exhibited works from the museum’s permanent collection including graphic masterpieces by William Hogarth, Francisco Goya, and Honoré Daumier, as well as contemporary works by artists Jenny Holzer, Roger Shimomura, Juventino Aranda, and many others. This exhibition aims to create a dialogue with the politically and socially engaged work of Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, as seen in our concurrent exhibition, Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest. While the Kienholzes were known as art world provocateurs, both exhibitions move beyond the purely bombastic and confrontational to show another side of subversion, one that is introspective and irreverent as well as surprising. Throughout history, artists have used humor and critique in their works to draw attention to social issues or simply to entertain. Recognizing their role in reflecting the historical moment, artists often identify, manipulate, or comment upon a period’s wounds, wars, hypocrisies, or other human follies and frailties. At times, their critical eye provides us with the ability to laugh at that which we fear, while elsewhere they help us better see and understand humankind’s shortcomings, raising our awareness in the process. As chroniclers of our times, these expressions of personal temperament or point of view may become asides to an artist’s primary practice while for others it is their life’s work; nevertheless, they are delivered with astute reflection and wry accounting. Our exhibition also makes room for works of a less overt nature, showing the artist as a helpful agitator transforming everyday banalities into unexpected mysteries, subverting expectations of art, artists, and the world we wish to know.
