Jan 15 - Jun 29    Michael Schultheis: Venn Pirouettes Exhibition
Artist and Washington State University alumnus, Michael Schultheis finds dynamic synergies in the languages of math and art. An economist and mathematician, with experience in the academic and corporate worlds, Schultheis employs analytical formulae within his luminous paintings. While the equations themselves offer a form of mathematical purity, Schultheis’ art subjugates this precision into imperfect visions, leaving room for metaphor, storytelling, and beauty. His canvases often have the appearance of chalkboards filled progressively with mathematical notations and three-dimensional geometries, that pay homage to Greek mathematicians Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Euclid and Archimedes. Fusing the abstract and observed, the rational and the experiential, Schultheis has forged an interdisciplinary, even holistic, practice, connecting us all in its expression.

Jan 15 - Mar 16    Social Space: Mark Bradford, Leonardo Drew, Julie Mehretu, and Wangechi Mutu From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation
Social Space brings together the work of four renowned American artists: Mark Bradford, Leonardo Drew, Julie Mehretu, and Wangechi Mutu. In their art, they share a commitment to abstraction, not only as a means of powerful image making, but also as a politically conscious act. In their depictions of labor, race, and conflict, these artists highlight sociopolitical markers and visual remnants of collective experience and the social fabric from which they emerged.

Jan 15    International Film Series: The Guilty
When police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears as the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear. The search to find the missing woman and her assailant will take every bit of his intuition and skill, as a ticking clock and his own personal demons conspire against him. This innovative and unrelenting Danish thriller uses a single location to great effect, ratcheting up the tension as twists pile up and secrets are revealed. Director Gustav Möller expertly frames the increasingly messy proceedings against the clean Scandinavian sterility of the police department, while Cedergren’s strong performance anchors the film and places the audience squarely in Holm’s tragically flawed yet well-intentioned mindspace.

Jan 19 - Jan 20    A Private War
In a world where journalism is under attack, Marie Colvin (Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike) is one of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time. Colvin is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the frontlines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. After being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka, she wears a distinctive eye patch and is still as comfortable sipping martinis with London’s elite as she is confronting dictators. Colvin sacrifices loving relationships, and over time, her personal life starts to unravel as the trauma she’s witnessed takes its toll. Yet, her mission to show the true cost of war leads her — along with renowned war photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan) — to embark on the most dangerous assignment of their lives in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. Based on the extraordinary life of Marie Colvin, A PRIVATE WAR is brought to the screen by Academy Award nominee and critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman in his pulse-pounding narrative feature debut.

Jan 22    Push Factors: Guatemalan Migration in Perspective

Push Factors: Perspectives on Guatemalan Migration

Artist Reception with photographer James Rodriquez: January 22, 5-7pm

Exhibit runs January 11 - February 24, 2019

In an exhibit of provocative and visually arresting photography that explores the factors driving residents of Guatemala from their homes, viewers are invited to consider the complexities of Guatemalan life and the stereotyping of migrants that permeates society today. Guatemalans have long experienced institutional violence and socio-political issues — corruption, poverty, genocide, gang violence and resource exploitation — that have coalesced into considerable human suffering.

The Prichard’s “Push Factors” exhibit, organized by Curators Without Borders and brought to the university in partnership with The Martin Institute, features work by award-winning photographers and photojournalists Rodrigo Abd, James Rodríguez and William B. Plowman, along with written accounts from migrant youth. The Prichard’s exhibit also features videos and additional still images by Rodríguez and Abd projected in the balcony galleries.

Being responsive to a rapidly changing world and meeting important issues of the day has long been a hallmark of our gallery. “Push Factors” helps bring depth and understanding to people simply seeking a better life.

Jan 27    Who Will Write Our History
Join our International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust Global Screening Event

In November 1940, days after the Nazis sealed 450,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper. Now, for the first time, their story is told as a feature documentary. Written, produced, and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, Who Will Write Our History mixes the writings of the Oyneg Shabes archive with new interviews, rarely seen footage and stunning dramatizations to transport us inside the Ghetto and the lives of these courageous resistance fighters. They defied their murderous enemy with the ultimate weapon – the truth – and risked everything so that their archive would survive the war, even if they did not.

Jan 31 - Feb 3    Green Book
In 1962, Tony “Tony Lip” Vallelonga, a tough bouncer, is looking for work with his nightclub is closed for renovations. The most promising offer turns out to be the driver for the African-American classical pianist Don Shirley for a concert tour into the Deep South states. Although hardly enthused at working for a black man, Tony accepts the job and they begin their trek armed with The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide for safe travel through America’s racial segregation. Together, the snobbishly erudite pianist and the crudely practical bouncer can barely get along with their clashing attitudes to life and ideals. However, as the disparate pair witness and endure America’s appalling injustices on the road, they find a newfound respect for each other’s talents and heart to face them together. In doing so, they would nurture a friendship and understanding that would change both their lives.
