Date: April 21, 2017
Time: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Event Description
Copresented with Festival Dance & Performing Arts.
Kaha:wi Dance Theatre is one of Canada's leading contemporary dance companies, exploring the intersection of indigenous and new dance performance. KDT was founded by artistic director Santee Smith, a leading Canadian choreographer known for meaningful, athletic, and earthbound movement language. Kaha:wi (Ga-HA-Wee) means "to carry" in the Mohawk language and is a traditional name for Smith's family. Kaha:wi Dance Theatre carries culture through dance, theatre, music, and design. This special program will include "The Honouring," a site-specific, multidisciplinary performance honoring First Nations warriors of the War of 1812 and the Onkwehonwe families who sacrificed to protect Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) sovereignty, culture, and land. Audiences will have the opportunity to understand the complexity of the war through the experiential lens of First Nations, offering a human face to our history. All First Nations took part in the War of 1812 as sovereign nation allies to Britain. "The Honouring" pays homage to their personal sacrifices and belief in what was best for their family, community, and future generations.
