Backyard Harvest Birthday Party
Date: June 9, 2018 Time: 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Event Description Lettuce Celebrate 10 Years of Outgrowing Hunger together with a Backyard Harvest birthday party on Saturday, June 9th from 3-7pm. The event is FREE and family friendly, with fun twists on traditional birthday games, cake, music, potluck, raffles, and no-host beer and wine!!! The seed was planted when a local gardener grew more lettuce than her family could eat and didn't want it to go to waste. Just like seeds after being planted, we began to grow our roots. With community members, active volunteers, and support from Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI), we began to connect local gardeners, farmers, and fruit tree owners to area food pantries and meal programs. Once our roots took hold, a BYH sprout emerged, breaking through the soil in hopes of providing everyone access to fresh healthy food. On June 11, 2008 that sprout blossomed and the 501c(3) Backyard Harvest was born! What began with a simple pick-up and drop-off service quickly expanded into a series of gathering, gleaning and growing programs that would quickly transform that initial lettuce donation into hundreds of thousands of pounds of fresh produce for the Palouse region and the Lewis-Clark Valley. 10 years later at least 25,000 people on the Palouse and in the Lewis-Clark Valley struggle with food security on a regular basis. Backyard Harvest continues to glean fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste and share them across the region with increasing efforts to meet the need. With support from volunteers, gardeners, homeowners, donors, churches, students and many others we have gleaned, gathered, grown, donated, and delivered over 300,000 pounds of fresh, local food to food pantries, senior meals, youth-based and alternative access sites across the four-county, 4,000 square mile area!!!! Come celebrate our work over the past 10 years and help us plan, prepare, and fund the Next 10!
